History
The Arawak Indians have been the first inhabitants of the Bahamas; they were sent by the Spaniards to labor in the mines and sugar mills of Cuba and Haiti. These islands are known as Columbus' first New World discovery in 1492, when he set ashore on an island he renamed San Salvador. A group of English merchants and pioneers from Bermuda colonized Eleuthera and attempted to establish the first republic in the New World. After the American Revolution, Loyalist refugees fled to the Bahamas, bringing their slaves with them. On July 10, 1973, the islands became an independent nation after being under the autority of the British Crown since 1718. Still, the accent of the native Bahamians and the two most popular spectator sports, cricket and rugby, are legacies of the British dominance.
Geography
The Bahamas form a 1 200 km (750 miles) arc archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, beginning only 80 km (50 miles) east of the Florida coast, while the southernmost island, Inagua, is about 96 km (60 miles) from Haiti. Of the approximately 700 islands of various sizes, 22 of the largest ones are inhabited. Clean turquoise waters flow along miles of white sand beaches.
With its tropical vegetation, exotic wildlife and colorfull marine life, the Bahamas offer an exceptionnal natural environment. The two most popular tourist destinations are the cities of Nassau and Freeport.
Generally, winter sailing cruises take you to the Exumas, a group of islands located 25 nautical miles south of Nassau. Topography of these islands is flat, but cays, islets and rocks are numerous.
Weather
The climate of the Bahamas is semitropical; it is similar to the one of Florida, even better because of sea influence. Maximum temperature is around 25oC from November to March and weather is usually good while lowest mean temperature is 18oC. Relative humidity varies from 74% in April to 81% in September.
Best temperature prevails from November to Spring. During that period, it is warm on day time, but it could be fresh during the evening. Winds speed are around 8 knots in winter time; precipitation are from 4 to 5 cm per month.
Food and Drink
With the exception of fruit, vegetables and fish, most food is imported. Many hotels and restaurants feature International cuisines and Bahamian specialties such as lobster, grouper cutlets, fried jack, conch chowder and fritters.
Sailing conditions
Cruising is known to be relatively easy in the Bahamas and navigation is mostly line-of-sight but sailors have to be carefull since water depth is low in many places. Prevailing winds in Winter are northeast 15-25 knots.
